Airplane travel has a very specific talent for turning small inconveniences into full-body irritations. Dry air, cramped seats, questionable bathrooms, dead phones, noisy neighbors… you know the drill. After enough flights (and enough “why didn’t I pack that?” moments), I’ve learned that the difference between a miserable flight and a totally fine one comes down to a few actually useful items.
This isn’t a “bring 47 things in a perfectly curated pouch” kind of list. These are the in-flight essentials I genuinely reach for every time – the unsung heroes that help me stay comfortable, clean, hydrated, and sane from takeoff to landing. Consider this your no-nonsense, real-life packing guide for flights that don’t leave you feeling wrecked afterward
— SARISUN Travel Pillow: If you’re like me and a light sleeper, getting any rest on a plane feels nearly impossible. I’ve tried it all – the classic donut pillow, the Trtl, even stuffing random pillows under my neck and none of them worked as well as this one. I tend to head-bob the second I fall asleep, so the full wrap and strap make a huge difference. Am I sleeping a full 8 hours? No. But even a few solid hours with this is a total saving grace on long flights. Another great part of this is that it packs down easily and compactly into my under-the-seat bag.
— Daily Pill Organizer: I always bring this with me when I travel. It’s slim, folds flat, and fits easily into my purse or carry-on without taking up precious space. I’m not using it for vitamins but more so for medications.
— Electrolytes: This is my go-to for flights and jet lag. I add a packet to my water bottle after security and it makes a huge difference in that super dry cabin air. The lemon-lime flavor is light and not too sweet, and staying properly hydrated helps me feel way less foggy, tired, and wrecked after landing.
— Airfly Pro: This little adapter is a must if you want to use your own headphones on planes. It plugs into the seat’s headphone jack and lets you connect your AirPods or any Bluetooth headphones instantly! No tangled cords, no airline earbuds. I love that you can pair two sets of headphones, and it’s tiny enough to live permanently in my carry-on. Once you use this, you’ll never go back to wired plane headphones again.
— Witch Hazel Wipes: These are a lifesaver for long flights and travel days. I keep a pack in my carry-on for a quick face refresh when my skin feels oily, irritated, or just gross from recycled airplane air. I usually use one before I try to take a nap/sleep and then one closer to the end of a flight to freshen up. They gently cleanse without stripping, calm redness, and make me feel human again without needing a full skincare routine.
— Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray: Similar to the above, this little spray is my in-flight skin sanitizer. A few spritzes instantly calm redness, irritation, and that tight, stressed feeling my skin gets on planes. It’s gentle, doesn’t sting, and works whether I’m bare-faced or wearing makeup. I keep it in my seat pocket and use it throughout the flight, especially on long hauls, and my skin always looks noticeably happier when I land.
— Colgate Wisps: These are a non-negotiable for long flights. They’re perfect for a quick brush after plane snacks, coffee, or before landing when you want to feel “awake” – no sink or toothpaste needed. I don’t like bringing my personal toothbrush on board (hint, bacteria) so I keep a few of these in my bag at all times because they take up almost no space.
— Pocket Mirror with Lights: This little mirror lives in my bag when I travel. The built-in light is a lifesaver in airplane bathrooms and dim hotel rooms, and I love that you can switch between lighting modes and magnification. It’s perfect for when I need to swap between glasses and contacts in my seat.
— Collapsible Water Bottle: I love this for travel because it takes up almost no space when it’s empty. I bring it through security collapsed, fill it once I’m airside, and then fold it back down when I’m done. I dread traveling with a heavy personal bag, so this lightweight bottle is the best option.
— Toilet seat covers: Okay this may seem a little silly, but I always keep a few of these in my bag for the airplane and airport bathrooms, because not all bathrooms provide these covers. They’re thin, biodegradable, and flushable, but give just enough peace of mind to actually sit down comfortably. One of those things you hope you don’t need… and are very glad you packed when you do.
— Vaseline Lip Therapy: Plane air absolutely wrecks my lips, so this is always in me regardless of travel or not. Vaseline simply doesn’t have weird ingredients that claim to moisturize.
— Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones: These are hands down my most-used travel item. The noise canceling is incredible, drowning out engine noise, chatter, and crying babies — and they’re comfortable enough to wear for hours without hurting my ears. Pricey, yes, but worth every penny if you travel often and value your peace.
