If you’re like me, you’ve accidentally joined the Hobonichi journaling cult.
It starts innocently. One planner. Then suddenly you’ve bought 3,828 pens, five different rulers (all for slightly different reasons), and a mini printer because of course you need to print tiny photos of your coffee.
And obviously—obviously—every cool girl on the internet owns a Toyo Steel cantilever toolbox. It’s the stationery equivalent of a Birkin. Industrial. Minimal. Perfect. Also… over $80.
After spending all my money on brush pens, kawaii asf stickers, washi tape, stamps, cartridge refills, clips, tabs, and things I swear I needed, I had to accept one thing: the Toyo Steel toolbox was simply not happening for me right now.
So I did what any rational person would do. I searched high and low on Amazon for a budget-friendly, equally cute alternative that still felt on brand, aesthetic, and functional for my needs.
And honestly? Amazon understood the assignment. Here are 6 options all under $50!:
1 — Trusco Y-350-GN Mountain Tool Box ($36.50)
This feels like the closest thing to the smaller Toyo Steel vibe. Long and slim, it’s perfect for pens, brush pens, rulers, and scissors. I’d keep this at home on my desk or shelf, great for daily-use tools and a clean, minimal foot print.
2 — WORKPRO Mini Metal Tool Box ($49.99)
OMG so cute. The drawers are perfect for stickers, memo pads, stamps, and small accessories. Best as a home storage piece probably since it doesn’t have a handle.
3 — Acshio Portable Steel Tool Box ($24.99)
This is a larger, classic toolbox shape that can probably hold a lot. Pens, washi, stamps, glue—everything fits. It isn’t super deep so you can see everything in one glance.
4 — MANUFORE Metal Tool Box ($42.99)
For the serious stationery girlies. The folding trays are ideal for washi tape, ink pads, and stamps, and everything fans out beautifully when opened. Definitely more of a stay-at-home journaling setup, but portable because of the handle.
5 — VEVOR Metal Tool Box ($32.99)
A great middle-ground size. Big enough for a solid collection but not overwhelming. Perfect for home use, and easy to move from desk to couch when you want to journal somewhere cozy.
6 — HARFINGTON Portable Steel Tool Box ($32.99)
The grab-and-go option. Compact and lightweight—great for a small pen selection, a few washi tapes, and stickers. Ideal for travel, café journaling, or journaling on the go.
Do I still want a Toyo Steel toolbox someday? Yes.
Did I need a $100+ box after buying 3,828 pens? Absolutely not.
